Caudiciforms
Caudiciforms store water in a swollen stem or root — the caudex. From Dioscorea elephantipes to Stephania erecta, each has its own growth cycle, so every listing tells you when it grows, when it rests and how it was propagated.

Understanding caudiciform growth cycles
The single most important thing to know about any caudiciform is when it grows. Summer-growers (many Pachypodiums, Stephania) want warmth and water in summer and a dry rest in winter. Winter-growers such as Dioscorea elephantipes produce their vine in the cooler months and rest through summer heat. Water only when the plant has active leaves or a growing vine, and always into a free-draining mineral mix.
Caudex development
A caudex thickens slowly over years. Growing the plant actively during its season — good light, warmth, and regular watering while in leaf — is what builds size. Keeping the caudex partly raised above the soil is an aesthetic choice; buried caudices often grow faster.
Caudiciform FAQs
My caudiciform has no leaves. Should I water it?
Usually not. Wait for signs of new growth, then resume watering gradually.
